Our first grandchild, Grady Daniel Nichols, was born early this morning. We have known since Thursday that it would probably happen soon, and since yesterday afternoon that he was actually on his way. We got a text from son-in-law Brett at 1:59 AM with this picture.
The vital statistics are as follows:
Name: Grady Daniel Nichols
Parents: Brett and Emily Nichols
Grandparents: Dan and Marge Cunningham, Warren and Aggie Nichols
Born: Sunday, February 3, at 1:26 AM at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, MA
Weight: 6 lbs 7 oz Length: 19 in
He has dark blue eyes, and just a bit of medium brown fuzz. His eyebrows are light brown/ dark blonde and the nurse thinks this will be his hair color too. Overall, it seems that he is going to resemble Brett.
So far he spends most of the time sleeping contentedly, either in his bassinette of in the arms of a parent or grandparent. He is incredibly cuddly, with the sweetest soft whimper when he wakes up.
You can see in the second picture that Grady has a cleft lip, which we have known about since the middle of the pregnancy. We are fortunate to live in a time and place where doctors consider this an "easy" condition to repair when he is a little older. And it is an answer to prayer that he seems to be able to eat normally. Apparently he already has quite an appetite (again he takes after Brett).
We spent the late morning and early afternoon with them today and took a few more pictures:

Dan's birthday is tomorrow, and we were going to have lunch at the Parker House Hotel today, but he didn't mind postponing in favor of holding his grandson in his arms for the first time.
Update Thursday 2/7
Grady came home on Tuesday. He is working on mastering the whole eating thing. Small frequent meals so far, which is hard on Emily and Brett (especially Emily) as it means that adult sleep comes in short stretches. Grady still spends most of the time sleeping, although he can occasionally be seen with his eyes open, a little more each day.

Grady is a very cuddly, kissable child, at least in the opinion of his Grandma.

And he is in for his first blizzard this weekend, a rite of passage for a New Englander. Good thing he went ahead and got the whole being born thing out of the way LAST weekend.
Update Tuesday, February 26
Grady is 3 weeks old now, and seems to be thriving. They are starting to establish a routine for him of naptime, playtime, then a meal on a 2 1/2 to 3 hour cycle. Grady has had a few outings in his sling and a few in his carseat. And his first trip on the T when Emily and Brett took him to Reunion Church on Sunday. We got to babysit while Emily and Brett went out to dinner this past Saturday. Grady slept most of the time, but we enjoyed being there with him anyway. The previous weekend his other grandparents, Warren and Aggie Nichols were in town and we all took turns holding him. Here are a few pictures from that occasion.

With Brett and Aggie |
Does anyone see a family resemblence?
Mostly I think Brett resembles Warren, but you can certainly see his resemblence to Aggie in these two pictures.
The same smile, the same manner in holding little Grady.
For anyone who would like to see more pictures, Emily has posted some on Facebook, and on a blog they have started for the purpose of keeping family and friends up to date.

Update Sunday, March 3
Grady is a month old today! He is currently on his first road trip, to see the Nichols family in New Jersey. He is pretty much destined to be a traveler.
I haven't seen him since Thursday. Three days and I am already suffering from Grady withdrawal! Here is a picture from Thursday, with Dan.
At one month of age, Grady is no longer the youngest member of my side of the family. His second cousin, Miles Kenneth Jackson, was born on Thursday afternoon to my neice Trisha Neeley Jackson and her husband Randy. Miles joins big brothers Lucas, Brady, and Carter. My sister and brother-in-law Mike and Carolyn Neeley are the proud grandparents. I'm sure Trisha and Randy are relieved that we can no longer refer to their family as the Jackson Five!
